Is Natural Always Safe?

When it comes to essential oils, there are some important safety rules, especially during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The products we create for massage and relaxation are, honestly, hard to resist. I love going to craft fairs, and more often than not, curious people will stop by and ask, “A massage candle? What’s that?” That’s my moment to shine. I’ll say, “Let me show you,” and then offer a little sample of our massage candles. Watching their faces change to that “wow” moment as they rub the warm oils into their hands, while I explain the ingredients and their benefits, has become my new passion.

Eight out of ten people walk away with a new massage candle or massage bar (sometimes more!). The other two often still want one, because let's be honest, lighting a candle, waiting for the oils to melt, and then pouring that golden, fragrant, warm elixir directly onto your skin for a self-massage or to share with a partner… it's simply irresistible. But if they mention they're pregnant or breastfeeding, that’s when I gently say, “Not just yet, love.” They’re usually very grateful, and this brings us to the big question:

Are essential oils safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

The short and honest answer is: no, not all of them are. But why?

Let’s break it down in a way that’s easy to understand. Essential oils are powerful gifts of nature. They're extracted from various parts of plants -leaves, flowers, roots, peels, stems-and processed through methods like steam distillation, hydrodistillation, or cold pressing. We’ll leave the technical details for another article, but here’s what matters:

Some essential oils, like Juniper, Nutmeg, Clary Sage (which we use carefully), Cinnamon Bark, and Basil, are best avoided during pregnancy. They can be overstimulating, have certain toxicities, or even trigger contractions in early pregnancy stages.

That said, there are essential oils generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, when properly diluted. These include Chamomile, Lavender, Ylang ylang (usually recomended for labor), Neroli, Orange, and Mandarin. However, even with these, it’s best to avoid using them during the first trimester, ask your doctor before using them at any point of your pregnancy, and always, always do a patch test first to check for sensitivity.

Some of the benefits of these safer oils include soothing muscle tension, relieving headaches or migraines, and helping ease water retention. When blended with nurturing carrier oils, they can also support the skin's elasticity and help prevent stretch marks.

At Orinoco, we care deeply about safety and well-being, especially for new and expecting mothers. While we always recommend waiting until it's safe, we want you to know that once you’re past the first trimester, or have finished breastfeeding, depending on your doctor’s advice, you can absolutely enjoy our massage candles and bars again. Our formulas are crafted with skin-loving butters, natural oils, and carefully selected essential oils that nurture both body and mind. When the time is right, we’ll be here with a little jar of calm, warmth, and indulgence waiting for you.

In summary:
Essential oils, when used safely, can support both mind and body. They promote relaxation, focus, and emotional well-being. But during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it's essential to be cautious and informed, natural doesn’t always mean risk-free.
